Providing Examples
Storytelling, and thus giving examples, throughout your public speaking presentation is one of the most important and critical ways to perfect the art of public speaking. This is because examples are crucial in helping the audience understand and comprehend the often complicated subjects that you are discussing. It is difficult to quickly understand and retain a theory, but a practical example provides the framework for each individual to garner an understanding, and retain the overall points.
First, let me make the case for exactly how important providing examples are. Examples help the listener in three different areas.
Support For starters, examples help to support and back up your speech. Throughout your presentation, you will be making various statements of fact and opinion, and both can be supported through examples and illustrations. They provide an alternative perspective to the situation. A statement of fact can be validated with factual information. A statement of opinion can be supported with real life demonstrations or citation. Whereas a listener has only your word to go on without an example, illustrations provide further backing for your subject matter.
If you were a manager trying to reinforce positive values and behaviors in your employees, giving examples would be a way to encourage your employees without hitting them over the head with your point. The same principle applies with your audience; the easiest way to persuade people is not to preach at them, but rather, to show them why your method, product, or idea was and will be successful if they adopt it. My favorite manager actually used this method frequently; instead of lecturing us on our poor performance, she would tell a story of a teammate or employee who had gone above and beyond to meet our client’s needs. It was easier for us to be inspired by this story, since it showed us that success was possible if we just tried a little harder.
Even though you are the expert on your subject matter, you need to present your audience with stories and examples that support your statements.
Understand Secondly, illustrations help the listener to understand the main point. Let’s say that your presentation is top-notch: filled with indisputable facts and figures that are relevant to the topic at hand. However, to most people, facts and figures mean nothing unless you give meaning and clarity to them. Your audience would be more willing to believe you if they clearly comprehend the whats and whys of your speech. In addition, examples and stories help make your presentation more believable. Because you’re relating the ideas you’re presenting to real-life events, people begin to understand how it affects them personally, as well.
My pastor has always been a model to me of giving examples that help me to understand the overarching topic. His stories are entertaining and always applicable – I’m usually thinking to myself “this could be a story about me.” And, they always tie back to his main point, which leaves me clearly understanding the overarching point. It’s the “Ah Ha” moment that we all want each and every member of our audience having.
